The National Commission for Exceptional Schools was founded on the premise that educational programs need not necessarily provide services in a conventional facility in order to guarantee their viability.  Independent and private programs accredited by the commission are required to meet consistently rigorous standards and demonstrate continued progressive advancement in the efficacy of their models.

Member schools shall adhere to non-negotiable standards of excellence designed to maintain a quality educational base for student programs, standards that promote individual student achievement as well as provide for the continued improvement of educational programs and services. The standards prescribed by the Commission are patterned after acknowledged and accepted standards of successful educational institutions and organizations. The Commission believes that this patterning provides assurance of overall quality and helps to expand the common ground between non-traditional and traditional schools.  Standards are intended to promote positive and progressive alliances with other established educational programs or organizations.
